why does my swimming pool filter shed sand during the backwash cycle?
joyohjoyous asked:
I noticed, when I opened my pool this spring, that there was sand on the shed floor; sand that had escaped from the pool filtre. When I backwash the pool, now, there is a healthy deposit of sand on the road where the water exits the backwash pipe. I wonder if there is a problem with my filter or is it the type of sand I am using. It is silica sand that I bought at a pool supply store. We thoroughly cleaned the filter, last summer, and checked that all of the parts inside the filter are in working order – no cracks etc. When we replaced the sand, we were very careful about not getting sand into the upright pipe – we covered it with a plastic bag. I sure hope you can help us to resolve this problem as I’d hate to think that I need to replace the filter – which is probably close to 15 years old by now. Thanks very much – Joy

Check flow rate on backwash, if you can throttle back the flow rate it may stop some of the problem. There also may be some sort of an orifice plate on the inlet to restric t flow, may be gone or badly worn. A valve placed prior to the inlet may be used for throttling flow throttling

Normally sand returning to your pool means you need a sand change but if this has already been done then i think there is something wrong with the filter. 15 years is a fair age for a filter, you might have a crack in it or need to replace an o’ring.
Just make sure that you did put filter sand in there as most other sands are too fine and will return into the pool with each backwash.
Good luck!
